“Under the Summer Moon”

He knew that eventually he would have to let her go. They stood hugging one another in the middle of a dead end road. Before he kissed her goodnight, he noticed that her big beautiful eyes glanced down at his mouth in anticipation, and she parted her lips. Time moves too fast, he thought. There had been very few moments like this, in his life, when he wished he could just make time stop.
Body language is the most authentic love language, and that night she was swooning in silence within his arms. Their relationship was still fairly new, and so the passion still felt true. At any moment he could have taken her, and if she had any objection at all then it would have been nothing more than a playful tease, but he refrained. He knew that if he invited her inside, then it would only be a matter of time before he was inside of her. Instant gratification was not what he longed for, but if their arrangement wasn't so discreet then things would get too messy.
In the middle of a quiet dead end road, he held her tight for a moment in time. She had her life, and he had his. Maybe people become more mindful when they reach middle age. His feelings were sincere, but he couldn’t imagine the two of them building a future together, at least not while they were still suffering the consequences of their separate pasts. Maybe they could just enjoy what they have while it lasts. Maybe maturity was overrated, but then again, maybe a serious commitment would just be another mistake. But maybe if they waited until they were ready, it would be too late.
“I have to get going,” she said. “I have work in the morning.” Her skin was glowing under the summer moon.
“I know,” he grumbled after sucking in one more smell of her sweet perfume.
