If I am consistently moving forward it's hard for me to invest any of my time for those who are in my rear view who suddenly feel like an experienced expert who needs to critique my progress. Opinions are the cheapest commodity around, and if you’re in business like me then you understand that reputation, credibility, and/or a proven track record goes a long way in separating a valued opinion from everything else. Just like customer complaints say something about a company, your business reputation and accomplishments say something about the advice you give to others. If a potential customer is reading through a company’s reviews and sees a lot of reoccurring complaints, well then there is a strong possibility that potential customer is going to expect those issues to arise with their experience, that is if they choose to shop there. If an entrepreneur is receiving business advice from someone who seems impoverished by their own poor habits and have nothing to show for their words, then there is a strong chance that entrepreneur is going to have a difficult time expecting positive results if they follow the alleged advice from said individual.
More Precious than Gold
This has nothing to do with being a “rich snob”, at least not usually. When you are in business for yourself as an entrepreneur, time becomes your most precious resource. With everything you have on your plate, getting started as an entrepreneur trying to build a business, there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day (especially if you are going at it alone)! You feel so guilty when your time isn't spent doing something productive towards achieving your goals or with your family/close friends. This is why most business people get very defensive when it comes to sharing their time, because spare time is very sparse once projects get rolling. So if you approach someone who is working so hard to build their legacy, with less than constructive criticism, when you have nothing to show for yourself, or proof of experience as a source of reference, that adds no value for either individual. The entrepreneur feels put off by your conclusively ignorant/silly statements of poppycock, and then you fail to recognize the opportunity to learn from someone who is actively making the changes to their life that you only talk about doing.
Real Recognizes Real
Business men and women experience time consumers like this on a consistent basis. You are considered a professional if you can avoid or feign these toxic experiences, without being mean about it (my goodness, does it take an expert level of patience & grace, sometimes). So if a business individual seems surly for no reason then it’s probably because their Spidey senses are tingling, alerting them that their time is being squandered. When you become an entrepreneur, and begin meeting many like-minded business people, you gain a mutual respect for people’s time. You begin approaching people with dignified purpose, you start doing your own research/due diligence to help yourself, before asking for help from others. When the time comes that you are willing to take action or ask for help to reach new heights and set goals for your life, you should reach out to experts in your interest areas that have already climbed the next rung on the ladder of success. There are plenty of coaches that anybody has access to, that will help you completely reshape your future. First you listen/learn, then take action to gain experience, in order to add value to your own insight. Knowledge and practical experience gains credibility, and how you gain that credibility is what shapes your reputation.
