“Innocence”
A Vignette by Jonathan Rossignol

“…I caught her red-handed. She was murdering her own child in cold blood… a mother,” Stylian’s words were cut short by the sudden need to audibly clear his throat.
There was a moment of silence before someone dared to ask him, “What did you do?”
Stylian revisited the memory. As he relived the experience, his mind was overwhelmed. He was not fantasizing about vengeance. He paid no mind towards figuring out a motive, nor did he spend time speculating upon any theory to rationalize what he witnessed. What he thought about was how a child smiles with sincerity. He imagined a small human being learning to develop their own thoughts and feelings, while walking tall among the giants of an unknown world. Children are so curious and yet not so suspicious of others. The child had no way of knowing what a human being was truly capable of. Stylian thought about how beautiful it was to be a child.
